The fastest vehicle ever built is the British Thrust SSC. Designed by Richard Noble, Glynne Bowsher, Ron Ayers, and Jeremy Bliss, this spaceship of a car set the world land-speed record in 1997, reaching speeds up to 763 mph. For comparison, that’s over 100 mph faster than a Boeing 747. The Thrust SSC was the first, and to date only, car to break the sound barrier.
A British rocket car, the Thrust2 was designed by John Ackroyd and driven by Richard Noble. Over two runs across Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, the car averaged 633 mph, making it, for a time, the fastest land vehicle ever built.
Created in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by Reaction Dynamics, and piloted by Gary Gabelich, the Blue Flame reached speeds of 630 mph on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats with a revolutionary natural-gas engine.
The current king of production automobiles is the Koenigsegg Agera RS. In testing, this Swedish beast averaged a whopping 278 mph. For the time being, the Agera is the fastest production automobile in the world.
After the original Bugatti Veyron was dethroned by the SCC Aero, the Volkswagen-owned company revamped the original design, producing the Veyron Super Sport, which produces 1,200 horses from its W-16 engine. It can hit 60 mph in 2.4 seconds flat and boasts a top speed of 267 mph.
SSC (formerly Shelby Super Cars) unleashed the Ultimate Aero upon the world in 2006. Its 6.3-liter, twin turbocharged V8 engine cranked out an insane 1,287 horsepower. With a top speed of 256 mph, it held the crown of world’s fastest production car from 2007 to 2010.
The Saleen S7 is a triumph of American engineering and remains one of the most celebrated supercars ever built. At 750 horses, it can hit 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 248 mph.
The McLaren F1 was considered the car to beat for years, and though it’s been surpassed by newer models in the past few years, it’s still a vehicle to contend with. Made by the McLaren Formula 1 racing team, the F1 was designed to be the ultimate roadster. And it’s hard to argue with 241 mph.

Only 15 of these beautiful Danish cars were made, and at a starting price point of $1.8 million, it isn’t hard to see why. At 1,250 horsepower, it can go from 0 to 60 in under 3 seconds and boasts a top speed of 233 mph.
